Technology Planning and Integration for Dental Specialists

The MME Origin

Where experience meets innovation—our story starts here

How three engineers built the leading name in dental IT

Milestone

Mid-1980s

Steve McEvoy, Rob Campbell, and Ray Mah met while studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. After graduation, they pursued advanced studies — Steve and Ray specializing in biomechanics, and Rob earning a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University.

Post-Graduation

Ray worked in environmental engineering and industrial automation, while Rob joined GE Research & Development in New York. Steve focused on biomechanical research, particularly on the human temporomandibular joint (TMJ), connecting him with radiologists, orthodontists, and dentists.

Late 1980s

As personal computers became mainstream, Steve discovered a passion for technology. His problem-solving skills led him to network engineering, linking 400 employees across 19 offices. He also wrote product reviews for PC World.

Early 1990s

Through his close ties with Dr. David Hatcher and ddi Imaging Centers, Steve began assisting dental specialists with integrating computers into their practices. Recognizing a growing need in this niche, he left engineering to focus on dental technology full time.

1997

McEvoy Mechanical Engineering (MME) was founded as a sole proprietorship. Initially, MME worked with a diverse range of clients — lawyers, accountants, jewelers, and dental professionals. Many of those clients remain with MME over 20 years later.

1999

Rob joined MME, bringing his engineering, IT, and programming expertise. Demand quickly grew, and both were working 60 hours a week.

2000

Ray came on board, adding industrial automation experience to the team, yet they were still working 60-hour weeks.

2001

Dr. Hatcher encouraged them to focus on sustainable business growth. MME Consulting, Inc. was officially established. The company’s first employee, Matt Harmony, worked out of Steve’s home office — hardware was staged in the living room, with toddlers underfoot. Rob worked from his home next door, and Ray from his in Santa Clara.

Early 2000s

Karen McEvoy, formerly of Genentech, joined the team to manage finances. Val Campbell, an expert in HR, also came on board. Both were alumni of the University of Alberta.

2002–2008

Between 2002 and 2008, the company saw significant growth. The first office was opened in Sacramento in 2002, followed by expansions in San Diego in 2004 and Santa Clara in 2006. By 2008, the team had outgrown the Sacramento Marina office and relocated to the Duckhorn Drive headquarters.

2015

The company established a new office in Seattle as part of its ongoing expansion efforts.

Present

MME remains deeply connected to the dental specialist community. Steve frequently speaks at industry conferences, helping MME grow while staying at the forefront of dental technology. If you visit Steve’s office, you’ll notice skulls on the shelf — they’re a tribute to where it all began.
